Couch surfing You want to sleep where?

Couchsurfing…this isn’t your

daddy’s barcalounger!

Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing

The idea of couchsurfing is something many people hear and immediately think of every bad urban travel story they’ve ever heard. I think I’ve seen enough horror movies (Hostle 1&2, Tourista, Brokedown Palace) to know that travel can kill you…but usually only in the movies.

As a military brat I’ve had the opportunity to travel to a number of countries and all before I was 15.  I’ve never once encountered a cannibalistic, ax-wielding, organ-harvesting host and I don’t believe I ever will.  While traveling through countries as a minor I it was often with limited or little supervision and as I got older I never knew I was supposed to be afraid of traveling by myself.

I talk to people about my dream to travel around the world and I’m not afraid to do it solo, but it’s not that big of an issue.  The thing that weighs on travelers is often the small bouts of loneliness that tend to happen when you find yourself somewhere new and don’t know a soul in the cityand this is where couchsurfing comes in.

Couchsurfing.org is a website devoted to helping strangers find each other.  It is a unique way to travel and share experiences that could never happen otherwise and it offers a traveler a place to sleep.  It can be an actual couch, a yert, or maybe even a boat, but it’s a roof over your head and an opportunity to see the cities and locations from the perspective of the locals.

Signing up is easy but finding people to host can sometimes be hit or miss.  You should host a few travelers in your own home/apartment/abode and see what it is all about.  Often the connections are brief and the idea is a cultural exchange that is beneficial to both the traveler and the host but sometimes it’s just a place to sleep while others go about their daily life.

There are stories of people having problems, but then again the world isn’t perfect.  There are problems the moment you wake up in the morning, but to discredit the opportunity without serious investigation means you’re going to miss out on the chance to see the world in a way you may never have thought of.

There are many different videos available online to watch adventures in couchsurfing and there is even a documentary called One Couch at a Time where one woman- Alexandra Liss, and 3 strangers hook up to travel the world for 6 months and document the entire thing.  They test the boundaries of sharing and living a nomadic experience.  If you have a change to view it I highly recommend it, but you can also view similar types of adventures when you click through on some of the YouTube videos by people currently living the travel dream.

Spending the night on the couch of a stranger is something that many people have done in their life, it happens in our youth before we begin to lose the shine in our eyes.  There are many more good people in the world than there are bad, and those that populate this little corner of the web at couchsurfing.org and people like Alexandra Liss are more than willing to share their experience.

Have you couchsurfed?  Tell us about your experience.

Hack the World

The New way to Live

Ditch the Day Job and Travel Hack the World

For 10 years Chris Guillebeau has been traveling the world on a mission to see all 193 United Nation Countries and he’s done it.  This guy knows more about travel hacking than any of the “guru’s” out there and he puts his money (well not really) where his mouth is. For a decades now, Chris has travel hacked his way into countries by doing both simple and complicated things to get to where he wants to go, and he’s not alone.

Many of the people celebrating with him on his birthday got there just the same way – by travel hacking.  What is this travel hacking you ask?  Well, it’s a way of getting your travel for free using several different means.  Most people don’t know about travel hacking but they actually do a version of it when they use the various points they accumulate on their credit card purchases – but travel hacking takes this to a whole new level.

If you thought extreme couponing was outrageous, think about how it works when someone is a fanatic about free travel. This is what happens when you put a little elbow grease into the mix and start planning and conspiring to get to the best travel locations and do it for free.  If you’re interested in learning more then there’s no one better to learn from then Chris Guillebeau.

Mike Hrostoski smiles in a field.

Mike Hrostoski
The death of Mike Hrostoski’s mother spurred him to jettison his life and go a global road trip, partially subsidized by getting Expedia.com to give him $1,800 a year in free hotels.

After ditching nearly all his material possessions and quitting his six-figure job in a Fortune 50 human resources department, Mike Hrostoski, 31, says he’s “living like a millionaire just on travel hacking.”

There’s no breaking into airlines’ websites required. The informal term “travel hacking” means using unexpected shortcuts to quickly earn free or reduced price airfare and hotel stays. This year’s first quarter already finds Hrostoski visiting Amsterdam, Berlin, Cancun, Columbia, and Olso, all for free, all from frequent flier miles.

Travel Hacking with and Without Credit Cards

Using Credit Card Purchases to Travel Hack

Learning To Travel Hack with and without Credit Cards

Learning To Travel Hack with and without Credit Cards

Have you ever wondered how some people can fly to all these exotic locations and do it for pennies or even for free?  Well, it’s not really FREE TRAVEL – instead these people have learned the art of Travel Hacking.  I know most people dread the thought of getting a credit card for the express purpose of airline miles, but it is one of the many ways people have been travel hacking and traveling for free.

When you think of airline miles and credit cards, you might want to check “what’s in your wallet?” All credit cards are not made the same and although the airline miles for purchases have been the mainstay of previous Travel Hacking Experts, using only credit cards might not get you to your travel goal.  When next you receive that credit card offer in the mail, consider your purchases and start planning how to use the credit card in a way that can benefit you and your family, but look into other options as well.

Travel Hacking is like an art form and there are more ways to travel hack than most people realize.  With a bit of exploration and research you may be able to find some interesting alternatives to just credit card miles.  If you’re interested in learning more; there are some great links on this post that will get you started toward learning how to TRAVEL HACK.

Why Travel Hacking Is More than Just Credit Cards

march 22, 2013 by
Hack My Trip

Hack My Trip.com

About Scott Mackenzie
Scott founded HMT while traveling on a budget during graduate school. He stays loyal to United, Alaska, Hyatt, and Starwood.

Travel hacking starts with all the things you could do to save money and travel better if you woke up tomorrow morning and wanted to book a trip. You can’t do that with credit cards alone. You’d need to have great credit just to start, and then you’d have to apply for the cards and usually meet some minimum spend. Then you’d have to find availability. Not exactly the hardest thing, but roadblocks nonetheless.

My version of travel hacking requires none of that. Tell me the trip you want to buy, the one you were just about to pull the trigger on, and I’ll tell you three ways you could change your plans to save money or make it more rewarding. It’s not always about flying free. Sometimes it’s just about knowing how the system works. Building up elite status and, yes, credit cards can make this game even more rewarding, but you don’t need them…

Ever wonder if anyone really gets to 1,000,000 miles?  This is what it looks like when they send a letter to tell you that you’ve spent an unnatural amount of time flying in the air.  Humans were not meant to fly or we’d have wings…well just tell that to Chris…as he earns more miles.
